Incorporating Dragon's original history, plus as much of the recent series as possible. Meaning, most of it, except for the flashbacks. Richard has a sense of balance, with regards to Chi. The position he's in at the beginning of the recent series might be explained as him immersing himself in an environment of negative Chi, to balance some of the more positive Chi acquired by training champions of justice. He's also motivated to understand Shiva, and how she's become what she is.
It is through the Chi balance that Richard retains more youthful vitality than he otherwise might.
